On 29 February 2016, just before the start of the spring survey season, volunteers in our bird monitoring programmes got together at Kritou Terra, Paphos, to review progress of our on-going schemes to keep track of the island’s birds.

BirdLife Cyprus' Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Sunday, 20 March 2016 at the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre, in the village of Akrotiri, Limassol. The AGM will start at 10.00 am, if there is no quorum at 10am the official start of the AGM will be at 10.30am. There will be welcome coffee/tea from 9.30am.

The terrible news of six Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus being found dead over the last few weeks, in the Paramali area of Limassol, dealt a serious blow to efforts to save our most threatened breeding bird of prey. BirdLife Cyprus recently also learnt of a November 2015 vulture death in the same area, bringing the death count to seven in under four months.

Award winning wildlife photographers Pam and Eddy Lane will be giving a talk next Wednesday, 3 February 2016, titled ‘In the Footsteps of Shackleton’, combining images from their two major expeditions to the South Atlantic where they visit the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica and show a variety of habitats, vast landscapes and exceptional wildlife. Among them, sites that polar explorer Ernest Shackleton visited during his epic expedition of 1914 to 1916.

Hundreds of Cypriot citizens and tourists have been flocking to Larnaka Salt Lake the past few weeks to admire the amazing Flamingos that have arrived in Cyprus in their thousands in search of food and shelter. According to the most recent bird count, 12,500 Flamingos have settled at Larnaka Salt Lake and 2,500 more at Akrotiri Salt Lake.

Some 20 recorders covered 36 wetlands (and two coastal sites) across the island as BirdLife Cyprus took part in the 50th International Waterbirds Census (IWC) mid-winter count, which has been organised by Wetlands International since 1967. Some 25,453 birds, of 56 different species were recorded over the weekend of 16-17 January 2016.
