Cyprus has many beautiful Easter traditions, but the handsome Great Tit pictured here is the victim of a particular custom in a particular village that is far from ‘beautiful’. The village in question is Omodhos, picturesque and popular with visitors from within and beyond Cyprus. But come Tuesday after Easter every year, some residents take to the narrow lanes of the mountain village, shotguns in hand, and shoot birds flying over the rooftops…

BirdLife Cyprus invites you to the opening of the Drawing and Photography Exhibition of the ‘153 birds’ campaign! The starting point of the ‘153 birds’ campaign and the drawing competition was a successful event organised on Sunday 17 April 2016 at the Famagusta Gate Moat. On that day, more than 200 people of all ages joined this special event to listen to fairy tales and songs about birds and to draw pictures of birds. Within the two months that followed, we received more than 300 praiseworthy and creative art works from children, teens and adults.

At this point of the year, millions of migratory birds are leaving Europe flying to their wintering places in Africa. Cyprus is on one of the main migratory flyways in Europe and so every autumn and spring hundreds of thousands of birds pass through our island: from colourful Bee-eaters as they call and swirl through the air hunting for insects to imposing migrating raptors, such as the Red-footed Falcon and the Pallid Harrier, species of global conservation concern. BirdLife Cyprus invites people to take the opportunity to discover the fascinating world of bird migration on 2 October 2016.

Exactly two months ago, on a beautiful spring Sunday, BirdLife Cyprus celebrated the launch of the drawing competition ‘153 birds’ at the Famagusta Gate Moat in Nicosia, with fairytales, songs, smiles, old and new friends. Today, on the final day of the competition, we review the last two months: we have received nearly 300 incredible drawings, a lot of enthusiasm for the magical world of birds. The response has exceeded our expectations and we would like to thank each and every one who submitted a drawing and everyone who supported our campaign!
