2021 Wall Calendar
The BirdLife Cyprus 2021 calendar is dedicated to the five owl species of Cyprus: the Barn Owl (Tyto alba), the Little Owl (Athene noctua), the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), the Cyprus Scops Owl (Otus cyprius) and the passing Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus). These five owls can be found all over the island, mainly in forests and farmland areas, as well as around towns and villages. Although owls can also be active during the day, it is easier to hear one than see one. From the eerie and often misunderstood call of the Barn Owl to the sweet but melancholic song of the Cyprus Scops Owl, the Cypriot countryside comes alive at night as the sound of these nocturnal creatures travels through the darkness. We are extremely proud to host these five species to our island, and even more so of the Cyprus Scops Owl, which was recently recognized by BirdLife International as a full species, endemic to Cyprus, with the new scientific name Otus cyprius.
