A few days ago, the European Commission opened a public consultation on deforestation - this is our chance to call for an EU law to stop products linked to deforestation from entering the EU market.
Together with 50 partners across Europe, we are starting a new European campaign with global impact - #Together4Forests - to make this law a reality.
This public consultation will be open until 10 December and is our once in a lifetime opportunity to dramatically slow habitat destruction. You can help save rainforests, grasslands and wetlands, and help fight climate change. Together, we demand the European Commission to protect our future NOW.
What’s at stake?
Forests are essential for our survival. Not only do they provide oxygen to the air we breathe and purify the water we drink, but they are also home to millions of plants, animals and people. Moreover, healthy forests protect us from diseases and viruses, and they are critical for absorbing carbon emissions from the atmosphere.
The products we buy in Europe are directly and indirectly linked to the deforestation of rainforests and degradation of other habitats across the globe, such as grasslands and wetlands. Unknowingly, we are literally eating up our forests! As consumers, we want to be sure the products we buy contain sustainably produced ingredients - we want to keep our plates deforestation-free! But European citizens are among the top consumers of products with ingredients originating from deforested and degraded areas like unsustainably produced palm oil, cocoa and soy, which is used to feed our farm animals.
How can you help?
We are asking the European Commission for a strong law that stops products linked to deforestation from entering the EU market by the end of 2021. This law is now within reach, but we need your support to make it happen. Let the European Commission know you care about this issue and demand a change now! Sign our petition and we will send a pre-filled response to the public consultation.
