BirdLife Cyprus gave a talk on the importance of the protection of Androlykou gorges, located in Akamas Peninsula Natura 2000 site, during a workshop organized by the Cultural Heritage group of Neo Chorio village. The workshop took place on 9 April 2016, at the Community Council offices of Neo Chorio. The purpose of the workshop was to inform the people of the area about the destructive consequences of quarry expansion in their village and also for locals to demonstrate their opposition against the government’s plans for the area. Apart from BirdLife Cyprus, speakers included people from the Department of Forests, the Department of Geological Surveys and the Mining Service of Cyprus.

The fourth IBA Caretakers’ workshop was organized by BirdLife Cyprus on 23 and 24 April 2016, at Droushia village. The meeting aimed to bring IBA Caretakers together for an annual meeting and to offer training on issues that help IBA Caretakers carry out their work easier. During the workshop, the current status of the network was presented and IBA Caretakers had the opportunity to learn more about the Nature Directives and received training on Google Earth and GPS applications. Moreover, emphasis was given on the methodology of annual reporting. In parallel, IBA Caretakers had the opportunity to practice their skills in the field and have any questions they might have answered.

The Darwin project for the restoration of Akrotiri Marsh organised an open discussion on 13 April 2016 for birdwatchers, nature photographers and visitors of Akrotiri Marsh to present the plans for visitor facilities and listen to feedback from participants. During the meeting, BirdLife Cyprus gave an overview of the project’s aim and activities and then RSPB (BirdLife in the UK) which has extensive experience in nature reserve management and visitor facilities provided some details on the location of the birdwatching hides and the new habitat features the project is creating this autumn (2016).

The second and final round of consultations with local communities over management plans for Special Protection Areas (SPAs), i.e. Natura 2000 sites for birds, is in full swing. Between mid-February and mid-April, a total of 15 meetings were completed by BirdLife Cyprus and its contract partner, consultants IACO Environmental. The communities visited ranged from Ayia Napa and Paralimni in the south east to the Troodos and Diarizos areas further west.

‘Singing for Akamas’ a one day event, was organised by the ‘Cyprus Natural Coastline’ initiative, ‘Limassol Initiative for Akamas’ and ‘Save Akamas/ Save Cyprus’ on Sunday 27 March 2016. The event took place at the amphitheatre of Molos (Limassol), between 12:00 - 22:00 with 14 local bands and DJs participating.The event was organised following the recent decisions of the Ministerial Council on the Akamas issue, in an effort to oppose them and also to raise awareness about the need for protection of Akamas.

More than 30 delegates from conservation NGOs and other organisations from 24 countries, such as Spain and the UK, as well as countries of the Middle East, North Africa and the Balkans, met for a Mediterranean Flyway Conservation Network workshop organised in Lisbon (Portugal) by BirdLife International and hosted by SPEA (BirdLife in Portugal). The workshop titled ‘Mitigating the effects of wind farms and power lines on birds’ was supported by the MAVA Foundation and took place on 24 – 25 February 2016. BirdLife Cyprus participated at this workshop with one delegate.

Award winning wildlife photographers Pam and Eddy Lane will be giving a talk next Wednesday, 3 February 2016, titled ‘In the Footsteps of Shackleton’, combining images from their two major expeditions to the South Atlantic where they visit the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica and show a variety of habitats, vast landscapes and exceptional wildlife. Among them, sites that polar explorer Ernest Shackleton visited during his epic expedition of 1914 to 1916.
