The future of wild birds in Cyprus and the prevention of a penalty from the European Union are now at the hands of the Plenary of the Cyprus Parliament, which is meeting on Friday, 9 June 2017. More specifically, ‘The Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game Species (Amendment) Law of 2016' has been submitted for voting. Environmental NGOs are calling on the Plenary to vote against this specific law amendment which was prepared and submitted by the Game and Fauna Service.

The agriculture committee of the European Parliament (COMAGRI) has blocked a regulation amendment proposing to ban the use of pesticides in Ecological Focus Areas, areas that are dedicated to nature conservation.

BirdLife International has just released the publication European birds of conservation concern: populations, trends and national responsibilities. This publication – launched on 20 May  – summarises the conservation status of 541 wild bird species in 50 European countries and territories (based on the 2016 IUCN Global Red List and taxonomic update), and aims to help national governments to easily identify the species that are in urgent need of attention and protection. For Cyprus, the new report shows that 40% of our breeding species have an unfavourable conservation status.

The completion of a two-year project to restore Akrotiri Marsh was marked by a celebratory inauguration event at the Akrotiri Marsh hide. The event took place with great success yesterday (18 May), highlighting the project’s achievements. Locals from Akrotiri Community, birdwatchers, photographers and nature lovers celebrated together the completion of the pioneering project.

To celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) BirdLife Cyprus is organising two birdwatching outings for families, one at Athalassa Park and one at Oroklini Lake to introduce young and old to the wondrous world of migratory birds and birdwatching.
