Key information: The Moorhen is a common waterbird that is found in Cyprus all year round. It has a red bill with a yellow tip and a white line on its side and under its tail. It is quite noisy and will often chase away other Moorhens or other bird species that enter its territory. It is usually found at the water’s edge or near it, looking for food. It is a bit smaller than the Coot.

Length: 27 – 31 cm

Habitat: Wetlands

When they can be seen: All year round

What they eat: Invertebrates, fish, seeds

In Cyprus: Can be seen at all wetlands of Cyprus

Status: Passage migrant, winter visitor, resident breeder
