We are happy to announce that, as of October 2024, Mrs. Melpo Apostolidou has taken on the role of Director of BirdLife Cyprus. Stepping into the role following the footsteps of our beloved late director, Martin Hellicar, Melpo brings over 14 years of dedicated experience in bird conservation, along with a wealth of expertise, passion, and vision to lead our organization into the future.

Melpo has been an integral part of BirdLife Cyprus for many years, contributing significantly through her work in project management and planning, awareness raising, and communication. Her unwavering commitment to protecting wild birds and their habitats has been evident in her efforts, particularly in wetland restoration and her pivotal role in the conservation of our threatened Griffon Vulture population in Cyprus over the past five years.

A highly motivated conservationist, Melpo holds a Degree in Biology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an MSc in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment from the University of Southampton, UK. Her academic background, combined with her hands-on experience, has enabled her to achieve remarkable milestones during her time at BirdLife Cyprus. These include the successful implementation of our membership strategy, the delivery of key wetland restoration projects such as the LIFE Oroklini Project and the Akrotiri Marsh Project, and most recently, our flagship project, ”LIFE with Vultures.”

Melpo’s leadership and dedication have already made a profound impact on our organization and the conservation landscape in Cyprus. As she steps into her new role, we are confident that her passion, expertise, and vision will continue to drive BirdLife Cyprus towards even greater achievements in bird and habitat conservation.

Please join us in congratulating Melpo on her new position and wishing her the very best as she leads our team in this exciting new chapter. Together, we look forward to continuing our mission to protect and conserve Cyprus’s precious biodiversity under her guidance.

Congratulations, Melpo!
