The breeding season is upon us, but for some birds, finding a suitable and safe nesting site can prove to be a challenge. To ensure safe nesting sites, BirdLife Cyprus placed 30 nest boxes for Common Swifts at five Cyta buildings in Nicosia, Larnaka and Limassol. The nests are specially designed to attract Common Swifts and are now ready to welcome their first pairs.

Nesting during this season in the scrub and cliffs of Cape Greco are two very important bird species: the Cyprus Wheatear and Cyprus Warbler. Birdwatchers from all over the world visit our island to enjoy them, since they breed only in Cyprus. Although this important area is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network, these days it has turned into a rally track, with nests and vulnerable young birds only meters away from the rally routes.

Today nature won over pesticides…but by default. By not reaching the required majority to approve the blocking resolution by AGRI Committee members Mr. Dess (EPP, DE) and Mr. Agnew (EFDD, UK), the European Parliament automatically supported the European Commission’s delegated act that proposes to ban the use of pesticides in Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs). EFAs are areas where farmers are paid to leave important space for nature in an intensively farmed landscape.
