Every year on 2 February, we celebrate World Wetlands Day (WWD), a day to raise global awareness about the important role of wetlands for people and the planet. This year, the focus of WWD is the role of wetlands in combating Climate Change.

The LIFE Oroklini project has been awarded as ‘Best LIFE project’ together with 27 other conservation projects funded by the EU. This award rewards the effort for the restoration of Oroklini Lake and also highlights the importance of protecting important areas for wildlife as well as the importance of funding programs such as LIFE.

BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria – The Cyprus Conservation Foundation are celebrating World Wetlands Day and invite young and old to Athalassa Park on Friday 2 February from 14:00 - 16:30 for birdwatching and educational activities.

With Cyprus playing host to over 15,500 waterbirds taking refuge from the ‘frozen north’, BirdLife Cyprus and others are marking World Wetlands Day with an event at the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre on 2 February.

BirdLife Cyprus, in conjunction with the SBA Environmental Department recently organised two events to clear some of the reeds at Zakaki Marsh, at Akrotiri, Limassol. Zakaki Marsh is part of the Akrotiri wetland complex, the largest natural wetland complex of the island. It is one of the few breeding sites island wide for the Ferruginous duck - a species of global conservation concern.

Hundreds of Cypriot citizens and tourists have been flocking to Larnaka Salt Lake the past few weeks to admire the amazing Flamingos that have arrived in Cyprus in their thousands in search of food and shelter. According to the most recent bird count, 12,500 Flamingos have settled at Larnaka Salt Lake and 2,500 more at Akrotiri Salt Lake.
