With nature coming into bloom and spring migration underway, we change scenery for the last workshop within the framework of our creative mapping competition ‘Wild for nature’ by BirdLife Cyprus.  Within the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, BirdLife Cyprus in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities is holding a creative mapping workshop on Sunday 11 March 2018 at 9:30 am at the Archaeological Site of Kato Paphos, showing how interconnected our cultural and natural heritage are.

The Archaeological Site of Kato Paphos is an area of great cultural and natural value. In the area, which is an Important Bird Area (IBA) and belongs to the Natura 2000 network of protected areas, 195 different bird species have been recorded, a large number taking into account that in the whole of Cyprus approximately around 400 different bird species have been recorded. The Lighthouse and the surrounding area are important for the cultural heritage of Paphos, but also Cyprus in general, as it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The workshop is a unique opportunity to explore and experience this fascinating historical and bird rich site, in a different way. By taking part in the workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the importance of the site hosting our workshop, in regards to culture and nature and how these coexist, and to explore it by activating your senses to make your own creative map based on your experience! What shape will your map take?

Once you finish your map, you can submit it to take part in the ‘Wild for nature’ creative mapping competition, for your opportunity to win prizes worth over 1500 euros awarded by BirdLife Cyprus and the campaign supporters and to take part in a competition with the winning and most interesting submissions! Don’t worry if you don’t complete your map at the workshop – you can perfect it before you submit it to us (the submission deadline is 30/3/18).

Participation is free but is on a first come first served basis, due to a limited number of places. Registration is obligatory. Participants must follow a code of practice which promotes respect towards nature in order not to cause disturbance in the areas the workshops are held.

The event is held in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities within the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 and the ‘Wild for nature’ campaign by BirdLife Cyprus which is supported by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, CYTA, Mona’s Art, AWOL and Get Out.
