Cyprus is birdwatcher's paradise

Nestled in the Eastern corner of the Mediterranean, Cyprus boasts three endemic bird species that breed nowhere else on Earth: the Cyprus Wheatear, the Cyprus Warbler, and the Cyprus Scops Owl.  On the enchanting Troodos range, three endemic subspecies – the Cyprus Jay, Cyprus Coal Tit, and Short-toed Treecreeper – thrive in extensive pine forests.

Apart from these treasured endemics, the island’s location on one of the major migration routes between Europe and Africa makes Cyprus a key stop-off point for hundreds of thousands of birds that pass through the island every spring and autumn.

Spring migration gets underway in earnest from the middle of March, depending on how settled the weather is, and carries on until at least mid-May. Autumn passage starts in early August – even earlier for some wader species – and continues until early to mid-October. With rainfall, the wetlands of the island come alive, making Cyprus an ideal wintering place for many birds, such as the Greater Flamingo that congregate in their thousands in the island’s salt lakes.

Several species occur on the edge of their range and pretty much nowhere else in Europe, such as the breeding Black Francolin and Spur-winged Lapwing, and the overwintering Finsch’s Wheatear.
