The hunting season for the Woodpigeon (Columba palumbus) and Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) started on Sunday 21 August 2016 and will last till the end of October.

Hunting is permitted in most hunting areas on all Sundays from 21 August to 18 September. Moreover, in some areas hunting is also permitted on Wednesdays till 28 September, while in some coastal areas west of Larnaca and the Famagusta district hunting is allowed on a daily basis till the end of October. Full details of the hunting days and areas can be found on the Game & Fauna Service website εδώ. Apart from Woodpigeon and Turtle Dove, hunters are also permitted to shoot Rock Doves, Collared Doves, Stock Dove, Eurasian Skylark, Quail, Magpies, Hooded Crows, Jackdaws, Eurasian Woodcock and five thrush species (Eurasian Blackbird, Fieldfare, Song Thrush, Redwing and Mistle Thrush). It is important to note that there is no quota on the number of birds killed per species, hence a hunter can shoot as many of these game species per hunting trip.

If you witness any violations of the hunting law (such as shooting of non-target species such as Bee-eaters or shooting in closed areas) please report it to the relevant competent authorities – contact details can be found εδώ. Alternatively you may contact BirdLife Cyprus on 22-455072 and/or fill in a form on our website, where you can also find a full break-down of hunting regulations.
